In today’s fast-paced world, where fashion trends change at a rapid pace, the clothing industry has become one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation ... but a pioneering British company is aiming to help change the sector by recycling its trendy gear, writes Stanley Szecowka.
SeaSurf, launched by Devon-based entrepreneur Marc Astley and his family, believes recycling clothing not only helps reduce waste but also promotes sustainability by conserving resources and reducing the overall environmental footprint.
“Every item of clothing we make is designed from the start to be sent back to us when it is worn out,” he explained. “We make new products with the material we recover and, better still, customers receive a store credit.
“The importance of recycling clothing cannot be overstated. By choosing to recycle our garments, we actively contribute to waste reduction, conserve natural resources, minimise environmental impact, support local communities and foster a circular economy.
“Small actions, such as donating clothes or purchasing recycled garments, can have a significant positive impact on our planet. As consumers, it is essential to embrace sustainable practices and make conscious choices that prioritise recycling clothing. Together, we can create a more sustainable and environmentally-conscious fashion industry.”
The fashion industry generates an alarming amount of waste each year, with millions of tonnes of clothing ending up in landfills. Unlike natural materials like cotton or wool, synthetic fibres take centuries to decompose.
Recycling ensures that garments are given a second life instead of contributing to the growing piles of waste, added Mr Astley, who calls himself the company’s Sea E O. “As a family-run business we care about the environment our children will inherit.”
All SeaSurf clothes are made from 100 per cent organic cotton and garments are produced in factories powered by renewable energy.
