Bahrain is gearing up for the Formula 1 weekend and the festivities are in full swing. But if you find yourself out of the conversation because you don't know anything about F1, don't worry, we have you covered. Here's a list of terms you need to know ahead of the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix.
Safety Car
A safety car or pace car is a vehicle deployed onto the racetrack to limit the F1 cars' speeds in case of an obstruction on the track or bad weather.
Pit Stop
A pit stop refers to the practice of bringing the car into the pit lane so that mechanics can work on it.
Qualifying
Teams and drivers take part in three qualifying sessions to determine who will start the race in pole position.
Polesitter
The driver who claims pole position(the first position on the race grid) during qualifying for the race.
DRS (Drag Reduction System)
DRS refers to the flap or wing on the car that can only be activated on certain portions of a track to reduce drag. The DRS can also only be activated if the car is one-second behind another car.
Halo
Halo refers to the protective titanium structures above the cockpit of the cars to protect the driver's head from debris or during an accident.
Backmarker
A driver circulating at the back of the field, who are likely to be lapped by the race leaders is referred to as the backmarkers.
Bottoming
Bottoming occurs when the underbody of an F1 car hits the track surface, often causing sparks to fly out behind the car.
