A man in the UAE has been sentenced to three months in prison for adopting a child unlawfully and concealing her status.
The situation came to light after the eight-year-old quadriplegic girl with cerebral palsy passed away from heart and respiratory failure caused by complications due to her disease.
In his testimony, the Eastern European main said he had taken the girl in six years ago after his co-worker had asked him to take care of her, Khaleej Times reported.
His co-worker had explained that there was no information of her parents or legal guardians and after placing her in his care, he had disappeared, the accused said.
He then hired a nanny to take care of the girl who could not move or talk and would respond by moving her eyes, laughing or crying.
She understood English, Persian and Russian, he added.
The incident happened in June when the the nanny called the hospital after the girl's temperature increased, but she passed away before medical help arrived.
The accused was not home when the event transpired and immediately reported the matter to the police upon reaching home.
Forensic reports revealed that the death was of natural causes.
