A new horror film, ‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,’ reimagining the beloved children’s character as a serial killer is in the works.
The first-look images of the gory slasher movie have been released.
‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey’ will feature Pooh and Piglet as the “main villains…going on a rampage” after being abandoned by a college-bound Christopher Robin.
“Christopher Robin is pulled away from them, and he’s not [given] them food, it’s made Pooh and Piglet’s life quite difficult,” said director Rhys Waterfield in an interview with Vanity Fair.
“Because they’ve had to fend for themselves so much, they’ve essentially become feral… so they’ve gone back to their animal roots. They’re no longer tame: they’re like a vicious bear and pig who want to go around and try and find prey,” he further added.
Waterfield was able to reproduce the likeness of this iconic character as the original A.A. Milne’s children’s book character entered the public domain earlier this year.
Creators can make their own interpretations of Pooh as long as they avoid using elements of the story or character owned or added by Disney since 1961.
The character of Winnie the Pooh first came into prominence in 1926 after the release of the picture book collection ‘The House at Pooh Corner.’
In 1961, Walt Disney Productions started making films based on the character, making Pooh an iconic figure in animation.
Popular fictional characters like Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood are already in the public domain.
Disney’s iconic Mickey Mouse is slated to enter the public domain as Disney’s copyright for ‘Steamboat Willie’- the first animated film featuring Mickey- expires in January 2024.
The copyrights to Superman, Batman, Disney's Snow White, and early Looney Tunes characters will all fall into the public domain between 2031 and 2035, paving the way for re-interpretations of these beloved childhood characters.
