The island’s most eminent charity golf tournament is the latest event to be delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 23rd Island Classic Golf Tournament, organised by the American Mission Hospital (AMH), was scheduled for November 5, 6 and 7, and has been postponed until early next year.
Dr George Cheriyan, AMH chief medical officer and corporate chief executive, said in a letter to sponsors: “We were hoping that by next month, we would be clear of the pandemic and the tournament could be safely held.
“In view of the ongoing impact on health of the pandemic, it was prudent that this was postponed to minimise any impact on the health individuals in the organisation of the tournament and the players.
“This has been done in respect to the countless people who have lost their lives and continue to suffer worldwide.”
The event, held at the private golf course of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s Saffriya Palace, drew 46 teams and more than 180 golfers last year, raising thousands of dinars.
The money helps support AMH’s community outreach programmes, including their diabetes, elderly care, autistic care and cancer awareness campaigns, as well as offer free medical check-ups at labour camps.
Dr Cheriyan added: “As a healthcare provider, we are in the forefront of this containment effort alongside the public health and the leadership team of the country that has shaped the mitigation of its impact on both lives and livelihoods.
“The tournament will hopefully be held in the first quarter of 2021.”
