BASKETBALL – Bahrain representatives Riffa are set to compete in the 3x3 Morocco Tour in Casablanca, starting today.
The two-day event is a Quest-level tournament on this year’s Fiba 3x3 World Tour. It acts as a qualifier for the higher tier Macau Masters, scheduled for October 18 and 19.
Riffa are set to take to the half-court with a quartet that includes Belgian nationals Dennis Donkor, Jonas Foerts, and Vic van Oosterwyck, along with Bahraini basketball star Mohammed Kowayed.
They are one of 18 teams divided into six pools for the competition’s preliminary round.
The kingdom’s squad are in Pool A along with Toulouse from France and Marrakech Hoops from Morocco.
Pool B features Hangzhou from China, As Far and CSYG Hommes from Morocco; Pool C is composed of Marijampole Mantinga from Lithuania and Moroccan sides AUI and The Tribe; Pool D features Sao Paulo DC from Brazil and host nation outfits ASSA Maroc Hommes and Baa Makna; Pool E includes Les Guepards from Benin, Lugano Casa Pol from Switzerland, and Lions from Morocco; and Pool F features Famous from Togo, along with Union Team and Alliance Team, both Moroccan sides.
Riffa begin their campaign today against Toulouse at 3pm before taking on Marrakech Hoops at 4.40pm.
Both times are Bahrain.
Following a single round-robin, the top placed teams from Pools A, B, C, and D will move directly to the quarter-finals.
Eight other sides will compete for the other four spots in a play-off stage, including the winners of Pools E and F, and the runners-up from all six pools.
The semi-finals and final will follow. All knockout games are set to be played tomorrow.
Meanwhile, also in action today in an- other Fiba 3x3 World Tour event in Europe are Bahraini side Seef, who are competing in the Debrecen Masters in Hungary.
Seef are to play with the quartet of Bahrainis Sayed Mohammed Hameed, Sadeq Shukrallah, and Nasser Al Mosawi, along with Serbian Bogdan Dragovic.
They are in Pool A for the competition’s preliminary round alongside Amsterdam Rabobank of the Netherlands and Lausanne of Switzerland.
Seef begin their campaign against the Dutch at 2.45pm, before they play their Swiss counterparts at 6.25pm.
