CRICKET – BAHRAIN roared to a nine-wicket victory over Malawi yesterday in a Tri-Nations Series being played at Gahanga International Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.
Malawi, who were put into bat, struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Bahrain bowling attack, managing only 110 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Sami Sohail had 33 runs, including five fours and one six, as their only batter to show some resistance. Kazim Somani added 15 including two fours.
Amongst Bahrain’s bowlers, Abdul Majid took one wicket for 11 runs while Asif Ali bagged one for 17 as the nationals controlled the middle overs. Muhammad Rizwan Butt picked up a key wicket while Imran Javed and Ali Dawood also had one wicket each, contributing to restricting Malawi.
Bahrain chased down the target comfortably in just 16 overs, losing only the wicket of Prashant.
Ali was the top performer with 59 not out, including two fours and three sixes. Prashant Kurup added 45 runs with two fours and a six to form a solid opening partnership with Ali.
Chisomo Tchale was the only wicket-taker for Malawi.
Bahrain’s bowling discipline, tight lines and regular wickets kept Malawi under pressure.
Ali’s match-winning knock ensured a smooth chase and he was later named the match’s Most Valuable Player.
Bahrain are back in action today with two matches, against Malawi and Rwanda.
