A small object in Japan that contains grass and a tiny bench surrounded by blocks has been officially recognised by the Guinness World Records as the 'smallest park in the world'.
It was set up by Shuji Koyama in Nagaizumi Town, Japan, after a resident of the town visited the US and witnessed the world's smallest park there, Mill Ends Park, in Portland. The tiny collective of grass and rock was set up in Japan as a direct competition to Mill Ends.
The space in Nagaizumi has long been unofficially called the world's smallest park by town residents since its establishment in 1988. However, it was recently that a professional surveyor was brought in to measure its exact dimensions. A Guinness World Records representative was also invited.
The park promptly took the title after measuring 0.24 sqm, beating Mill Ends Park which measured 0.29 sqm in area.
Mark Ross, a spokesperson of Portland Parks and Recreation, humorously remarked that Mill Ends resident family of leprechauns were ''outraged'' by the news.
