TENNIS – TOP seed Leanne Abouhamad barged into the third round of the girls’ singles qualifying draw yesterday in the J30 Isa Town International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) tournament, played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.
Leanne is one of several players looking to make it into the main draw of her singles event in the competition, which is a part of the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors calendar.
Leanne booked her place in qualification’s last stage after defeating Iris Gkrekou of Greece 6-3, 6-0. She will next take on Zaina Boodai of Saudi Arabia for a place in the tournament proper.
Also winning yesterday was second seed Maria Andreou Portselan of Cyprus, who beat Vasundra Balajee of India 6-3, 6-3. She will next take on RuoQing Yang of China, who beat Zeynep Eylul Bagdatli of Turkey 6-1, 6-2.
The other matches in girls’ singles qualifying third round are between Nina Kuptsova of Russia and Giulia Fiorenza of Italy, and Cara Du Toit of Namibia and either Lidia Ratobylskaya of Russia or June Grenness Tronhus of Norway.
Meanwhile, in boys’ singles qualification, top seed Issah Ali of Saudi made it to the second phase with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hursh Patel of India yesterday. He will next take on Artemiy Solovyev of Russia, who won against Bahrain’s Faisal Maseeh 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
Second seed David Mario Stefan Raducan of Romania was upset by Spain’s Sergi Ramis Coll, who took their match 6-1, 6-0. Sergi will now face Nelson Guo of the US, who was a 6-0, 6-2 victor against Arav Aravindh of India.
In other matches today, Levent Sabrioglu of Turkey faces Bexultan Bauyrzhanov of Kazakhstan, Veer Madam of India plays Dias Tulepbergenov of Kazakhstan, Tommaso Rosso of Italy takes on Ghannam Alghannam of Saudi, Raed Rizvie of Sri Lanka plays Alex Ramis Moyano of Spain, and Andreas Photiades of Cyprus goes up against Sumer Mehta of India.
Play in the main round is scheduled to begin tomorrow following the completion of qualifying today.
There will be a field of 32 players in both the girls’ and boys’ singles categories, and 16 pairings in each of the girls’ and boys’ doubles.
This week’s J30 Isa Town tournament continues until Saturday. It will be followed by another J30 ITF tournament from February 10 to 15.
The name J30 reflects the number of ranking points awarded to the singles winner of an ITF juniors tournament.
