Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has reiterated the Arab League’s full and firm support for the Egyptian and Jordanian stance rejecting ideas being promoted regarding the displacement of Palestinians.
“The Arab position is uncompromising on the issue of displacing Palestinians from their land, whether in Gaza or the West Bank,” he said upon arrival in Rome to open the Italian-Arab Business Forum.
“The Arab alignment in support of Egypt and Jordan’s stance is clear and unequivocal. The repeated old proposals to displace landowners from their land are unacceptable and not worth discussing,” he added.
“The steadfastness of the Egyptian and Jordanian positions, along with the legendary resilience of the Palestinian people on their land and the Arab support for rejecting displacement, will thwart all plans to liquidate the Palestinian cause,” he stressed.
Aoul Gheit’s comments follow a displacement plan for Palestinians floated by US President Donald Trump. “I’d like Egypt to take people. And I’d like Jordan to take people,” Trump said, prompting immediate reactions from both Amman and Cairo.
The Jordanian Parliament and foreign minister responded to Trump’s proposal, saying that Jordan will not serve as an alternative homeland for Palestinians. They stressed that efforts to displace Palestinians will not help security in the region.
The Egyptian foreign ministry also issued a statement condemning any breach of Palestinian rights, whether through the construction of settlements, annexation of occupied territories, or forced displacement from their homes.
