Costumes from the iconic ABC show Bananas in Pyjamas were reportedly stolen by the Russian mafia and held for ransom.
Kenneth Radley, the man behind the costume, revealed the crazy story behind the theft on a podcast appearance.
According to Kenneth, the Banana costumes were stolen when the suits were taken to Moscow on a promotional tour. The perpetrators, who were supposedly from the Russian mafia, left a ransom note asking for AUD100,000 (BHD24,500).
The head of ABC asked the showrunners how much it would cost to replace the costumes and was told it would amount to AUD20,000 (BD4,500). So, after some negotiation, the network agreed to give the Russian mobsters AUD20,000 for the suits and sent their marketing head with a briefcase full of cash for the transaction.
However, the marketing head got cold feet and decided to hop on a plane instead, taking the cash with him to make new costumes.
It is unknown what fate befell the original bananas; Radley jokingly remarked, "The bananas are actually in some gulag in Russia, in some freezing cold jail”.
