ATHLETICS – BAHRAIN’S superstar printer and Paris 2024 silver-medallist Salwa Eid Naser will be hitting the track today on the first night of action in this year’s Wanda Diamond League Final, taking place in Brussels, Belgium.
Naser will be running in the women’s 400 metres as she aims for the third Diamond League title of her illustrious career.
The Diamond League is the premier one-day meeting series held annually under World Athletics, track and field’s international governing body. After a season of competing and earning points to qualify for the finals, the top athletes aim for the Diamond Trophy – the athletics campaign’s most prestigious yearly crown.
Naser won the title in 2018 and 2019. The former world champion will now be aiming to add another accolade to her already glittering collection.
She will be going up against a top-class field in her race, one that includes reigning world and Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, who Naser is hoping to finally beat this season.
Amongst the other athletes set to compete are Paris Olympics 400m finallists Rhasidat Adeleke of Ireland, Alexis Holmes of the US, and Sada Williams of Barbados. The field is completed by Amandine Brossier of France, Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands, and Lynna Irby-Jackson of the US.
Naser is one of two Bahraini athletes racing at this year’s Wanda Diamond League Final, which is also known as the Allianz Memorial Van Damme.
Reigning world and Olympic champion Winfred Yavi is the other. She will be competing tomorrow in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase race.
Bahrain have so far claimed five Diamond Trophies in past seasons, including Naser’s double and Yavi’s maiden triumph last year. The two others were claimed, also in the steeplechase, by Rio 2016 Olympics champion Ruth Jebet in 2016 and 2017.
