After the owner of a Russian supermarket chain announced that he would be paying one million roubles (around BD4,000) to each person proven to have got food poisoning from the store’s products, many decided to take him up on his offer.
They started literally licking eggs at the supermarket!
Last month, the Yekaterinburg-based Zhiznmart came under pressure after 18 people were admitted to hospital due to food poisoning allegedly after purchasing products at the chain.
Consequently, several suppliers declined to work with Zhiznmart, fearing health inspections by Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian federal agency in charge of consumer wellbeing and protection.
This prompted the owner to publicly announce that he would compensate each person proven to have fallen ill from consuming his stores’ products.
As his promise went viral, people began flocking to the supermarket ‘hoping to get sick’.
The Baza Telegram channel reported many people desperately trying to get contaminated, some even going as far as licking eggs inside the supermarket to increase their chances of food poisoning.
‘’As far as I understand, according to the latest information, Rospotrebnadzor and local hospitals are simply inundated by claims of food poisoning related to Zhiznmart without any solid proof,’’ claimed Ivan Zaichenk, the founder of Zhiznmart.
He added that “people complain about everything, about food that was prepared a few days ago in factories that have already been checked and passed all tests, and about food that they ate in April. Unofficially, this is associated with the promised compensation of a million roubles.’’
Moreover, Zaichenko said that “if we were found guilty in any of the 18 cases currently being investigated by Rospotrebnadzor, I wanted to do good and compensate the people genuinely affected by the problems that we created, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.
Due to the bizarre behaviour of customers frantically trying to get food poisoning, Zaichenko clarified that the only people eligible to obtain the one million rouble compensation now, were the original 18 victims who initially contracted food poisoning, and that the rest would be ignored.
