BADMINTON – THE Bahrain Para Badminton International 2024 got underway yesterday at Isa Sports City in Riffa, with more than 80 competitors representing 30 countries in the fray.
The tournament is being held for the third time in the kingdom. It has been organised and is being run by the Bahrain Paralympic Committee (BPC), in co-operation with the Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation (BBSF) and Badminton World Federation (BWF).
A number of national team athletes were in action on the opening day, although they all lost to their opponents.
Bahrain’s Mohamed Abbas succumbed 1-21, 4-21 to Muhammad Ikhwan Ramli of Malaysia in their men’s singles WH1 Group A match, while Ayoob Asad was beaten by Lukas Kyncl of the Czech Republic 3-21, 6-21 in Group D. Hussain Mohammed Abdulrahman fell to Majed Alsahafi of Saudi Arabia 9-21, 9-21 in their men’s singles SL3 Group B encounter.
In the women’s singles, Bahrain’s Fatema Asad lost to Annika Schroeder of Germany 0-21, 0-21 in their WH2 Group B contest, while in the men’s doubles SU5 and women’s doubles SL3-SU first round, Bahraini Abdulrahman was teamed up with Nepal’s Prakash Adhikari in a 10-21, 15-21, Group D loss to Turkey’s Tugce Celik and India’s Jyoti Jyoti.

This international event is the second major para badminton competition being hosted by Bahrain in as many weeks, following the successful staging of the first-ever Arab Para Badminton Championship, which featured six nations.
