GOLF – THE Bahrain Golf Association (BGA) yesterday paid tribute to the late Shaikh Abdulla bin Salman bin Khalid Al Khalifa, a leading figure in the kingdom’s golf community who was instrumental in the game’s development in Bahrain.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority president, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa said: “The journey of golf in Bahrain is full of names of those who contributed to laying the first building blocks for the game in the kingdom; at the forefront of them is Shaikh Abdulla bin Salman bin Khalid Al Khalifa.”
The late Shaikh Abdulla’s passion for golf began in the mid-1960s. He headed the Bahrain Golf Club in 1974 after its establishment, and also chaired the BGA in 2001.
Under his presidency, ambitious plans that contributed greatly to the sport were implemented, including the launch of the first King Hamad International Golf Championship in 2007.
The tournament is today one of the sport’s leading events for both professionals and amateurs in the region.
The late Shaikh Abdulla was also elected as the first president of the Arab Golf Federation during a founders’ meeting held in Bahrain in 1987. He held the post for four years.
The BGA extended their deepest condolences and sincere sympathy to the family of the late Shaikh Abdulla.
