Artist Annie Lennox ended her performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards with an emotional plea for peace in Gaza.
The 69 year old Scottish singer and songwriter declared “Artists for ceasefire. Peace in the world,” whilst raising her fist. The audience were impressed by the remark, leaving the stadium in a unified cheer.
Lennox held an emotional Sinead O’Connor tribute at the Grammys, stating that the Irish singer was a ''truth teller.’’ She performed 'Nothing Compares 2 U' in honour of her late friend, who was a vocal political activist throughout her entire career.
Lennox rose to International fame in 1983 with her hit 'Sweet Dreams'.
‘The Artists for Ceasefire’ movement was formed by a group of distinguished musicians, actors, filmmakers and multidisciplinary artists following the Israel-Gaza war. They joined hands and called for a ceasefire in Gaza, by co-signing a message to US President Joe Biden. The movement also emphasises the importance of humanitarian aid.
The Artists for Ceasefire website states, ''We come together as artists and advocates, but most importantly as human beings witnessing the devastating loss of lives and unfolding horrors in Israel and Palestine.’’
It urges all world leaders to immediately call for a ceasefire, release all the hostages, as well as allow for aid to reach the civilians of Gaza.
The statement adds ''we believe all life is sacred, no matter faith or ethnicity and we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians.’’
