BACK on the road after a break of a few months, Ed Sheeran, the ginger ninja of pop music, pulled out all the stops with a breathtaking two-hour-plus energetic and crowd-pleasing performance.
He showed all sides of his singing, guitar strumming and lyrical genius, one minute tender and vulnerable and the next full of fiery fight and explosive notes.
The support show featured charming and charismatic Calum Scott. He rose to prominence after competing on a TV talent contest, where he performed his version of Robyn’s hit Dancing on My Own and earned a Golden Buzzer.
The lad from Hull had earlier triumphed in a talent contest I’d helped launch in his local newspaper and he has certainly come a long way from performing in working men’s clubs.
The main act too came from just as humble a beginning and spoke of his journey from half empty London bars to the superb stage in Sakhir.
Ed Sheeran still pinches himself how a song he’d written about a lady of the night’s pitiful demise called The A Team propelled him into super stardom and a career of hit song after hit song performed not only by himself but other global stars.
Highlights of the show included a heart-rending tribute to a pal who died too early titled Eyes Closed, the foot stomping Irish inspired ditty Galway Girl and the rebel rousing You Need Me, I Don’t Need You.
Sheeran has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the world’s best-selling music artists.
Eyes Closed and you could almost believe you were snuggled up on the sofa when he belts out a ballad. But his uptempo sing-a-long specials quickly get the feet stomping and the crowd singing along in harmony and sometimes in competition.
The +–=÷× Tour (pronounced The Mathematics Tour) is the ongoing fourth concert tour by the English singer-songwriter.
Wearing a special black HOEX Bahrain T-shirt, the man who made a mint from a guitar and a loop pedal delivered the perfect performance. A modern day poet, last night he was truly masterful and magnificent.
