AL Najma Club last night edged closer to their GCC Clubs Handball Tournament final goal after topping their group with a 34-30 win over Kuwait’s Al Salmiya Club at Saad Al Abdulla Dome. The first half ended 15-13 to Al Najma.
They reached the semi-final undefeated in their group after defeating favourites Saudi Arabia’s Mudhar Club 33-26 on Monday.
They are now set to face Qatar’s Al Ahli, who came second in their group after losing last night 28-19 to Kuwait’s Al Kuwait.
Kuwait will face Mudhar in the other semi-final tomorrow with the winners of both semi-finals vying for the tournament’s top prize on Sunday.
The tournament, which continues until June 12, is being held in Kuwait City.
Al Najma won the Khalid Bin Hamad Handball League in April following an unbeaten run throughout the 2021-22 season, winning all the 20 matches to collect 60 points. They were the local tournament’s defending champions.
Al Najma Club board chairman Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Mubarak Al Khalifa told the GDN they entered the GCC tournament determined to battle for success.
“We have the quality, character and charisma to walk out as champions and we are playing smooth, strong and entertaining handball,” he said.
“Our coach Sayed Ali Al Falahi is no stranger to winning trophies with the club as a player and coach and with his mentality we are on course for further success.
“Mohammed Habib, our star young player, is a player to watch alongside our MVP Mahdi Saad and goalie Mohammed Abdulhussain. In fact all our players are up to the task.”
