The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities’ (Baca) International Museum Day (IMD) – The Power of Museums – was launched yesterday and features a series of events to be staged later today and tomorrow to mark the occasion.
The international Council of Museums (ICOM), established IMD in 1977, and since then, it has become a worldwide event held annually in May.
IMD aims to raise awareness about the importance of museums for cultural exchange and enrichment as well as to help develop mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among people.
The Bahrain National Museum will feature the Museum’s Best Photo Contest, where participants, aged eight to 12, will photograph the museum. Last entries will be accepted today.
Meanwhile tomorrow, there will be a Write in Cuneiform workshop at 4.30pm and a movie screening of Night at the Museum 1 and 2 at 7.30pm.
Participants can also snap up pictures at the museum on Friday as part of the Photo at the Museum event from 10am to 8pm which is open to ages 18 and above. There is also a Create Your Museum workshop at 4.30pm, in which participants aged seven to 10, will have the chance to build their own mini-Bahrain National Museum construction plan.
There will be The Legend of Gilgamesh workshop tomorrow as well at 4.30pm where participants aged seven to 10 will learn about the legend and stage the story on the mini-theatre.
The Bahrain National Museum Library is hosting a ‘Have you filled a bucket today’ event for children aged five to 10, based on the heart-warming book.
It encourages positive behaviour using the concept of an invisible bucket to show children how easy and rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation, and love by filling buckets. It also teaches them that bucket dipping is a negative behaviour, not a permanent label. It also explains that it is possible to fill or dip into our own buckets. That is happening at 5.30 pm and there is a registration fee.
Last but not least, there will be a Scavenger Hunt for adults at the museum competition tomorrow. Competitors will learn more about the history of Bahrain and important historical periods. There is set to be 20 groups with each group including two players. It starts at 6.30pm and registration is still open.
* Aside from IMD, Baca is delighted to unveil the restoration of the Al Fadhel Mosque minaret today at 8pm. People are free to attend to enjoy the restored beauty and symbolism.
The minaret has been an important aspect of the visual identity of Bahrain for all those arriving through the Manama port. Baca worked on restoring the minaret of this historic mosque by reviving its original appearance and design, with the support of Her Highness Shaikha Mariam bint Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and the Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait.
