After 13 deaths due to e-scooter-related incidents in the first five months of 2025, Dubai neighbourhoods have taken measures to ban the use of e-scooters within them.
Though they offer convenient transport at no cost to the environment, e-scooters and their riders have become a public menace with their disregard for traffic rules and pedestrians, according to several Dubai neighbourhoods.
Major neighbourhoods such as Jumeirah Beach Residences and Victory Heights have resorted to an outright ban on e-scooters, amid calls for a blanket ban in all residential areas.
However, calls for the ban have been met with counter-arguments. Many argue that these scooters offer a cheap and convenient commute for many people, and that instead of a ban there should be some regulation to ensure everyone's safety.
Currently, only a handful of areas in Dubai have been designated as official e-scooter lanes by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority.
