BAHRAIN’S Formula One medical team has worked hard to make sure every aspect of the race is dealt with says Bahrain Motor Federation (BMF) Chief Medical Officer Dr Amjad Obeid.
Dr Obeid stressed on the importance of abiding by the medical rules of FIA which are published and reviewed twice a year.
“Safety measures are always a top priority in sports. The FIA is very strict when it comes to medical procedures,” Dr Obeid said.
The medical team has been excelling in recent events at the BIC and has always been open to suggestions for improvement.
The BMF has also organised a seminar for the eighth consecutive year under the Ministry of Health to prepare the medical team.
“The seminar saw us address safety issues; we also watched the crash involving Fernando Alonso repeatedly and discussed a lot about safer ways which we could have adopted during the situation. There is always a new thing to learn,” Dr Obeid stressed.
The medical team consists of 200 members divided into different teams.
The ambulance team consists of 11 ambulances distributed around the circuit with two stations at the medical centre and one at the spectators’ area.
There will be six medical intervention cars, each consisting of a paramedic, doctor and a driver. There will also be three extrication teams, which will be responsible for taking the driver out of an accident scene with a delicate approach to minimise any injury.
There will also be a spectator medical team which will be the first to respond to any spectator-related cases and a clinic at every stand with three specially for the vending area.
All medical teams are tested and evaluated separately by an FIA medical delegation before every international event.
“The hardest challenge is being always trained and examined and prepared for the different situations you can face. The number of fatal accidents has significantly decreased in number,” Dr Obeid added.
“I pray we are never needed in any situation, but if we are, we will be the first people on the scene and the first to respond,” he concluded.
