Bahrain: MARKING the 40th year anniversary of the first Concorde flight to Bahrain, a scale model of the airliner with graphics was showcased yesterday at Sakhir, the venue of Bahrain International Air Show (BIAS) 2016.
The occasion of the first flight from London to Bahrain which coincided with inaugural day of the three-day air show was celebrated as the highlight of events marking the aviation heritage shared by Bahrain and the UK.
Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry civil aviation assistant under-secretary Hussain Al Shuail described the relationship between the two nations as “very robust”.
“The arrival of Concorde was just one episode in that relationship,” he said pointing to the Spitfire XIX bought by Bahraini donations during the Second World War, which carried the island’s name proudly under its cockpit.
Mr Al Shuail was speaking at the BAE Systems stand at the BIAS 2016, where an array of events were lined up to celebrate the historic 200 years of relations between the UK and Bahrain.
Concorde is on a static display at the show and will stay in Bahrain for much of the year, to be shown at various locations around the island.
British Ambassador Simon Martin said that it was a “wonderful time” to be the UK’s representative to the kingdom as the bicentenary was marked.
The aviation links between the two nations would continue, he said.
