Manama: Bahrain’s first female councillor died yesterday.
Fatima Salman, who also made history becoming the first municipal council member in the GCC, served as the councillor in Busaiteen from 2010 to 2014.
According to members from the Muharraq Municipal Council, Ms Salman died after a long battle with cancer.
Ms Salman was an active member of several philanthropic, housing and nationalist projects. She was a board member of Al Hekma Society for the Retired, member of the Tariq bin Zeyad School’s Parents Committee and a former member of the Residents Committee of Defending Muharraq and Its Shores, Emergency Humane Cases Committee and Mina Salman Union, among others.
She had a secondary school certificate, a diploma in computers from Delmon Academy and certification in first aid as a trainer.
Some of her participations abroad included an initiative to distribute Quran copies to the poor in Africa, delivering aid to Palestine, Pakistan, Iraq and Egypt as well as taking part in a number of Islamic conferences.
She took part in a number of seminars and forums in Bahrain, including those organised by the Supreme Council for Women, Bahrain Institute for Political Development and the Shura Council.
