Abu Dhabi: Two lots of Extraneal peritoneal dialysis solution have been withdrawn due to high levels of sodium hydroxide, which may pose health risks.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention withdrew (Extraneal 2L/2L Twinbag number W9B28T0, dated 29/2/2020) and (Extraneal 7.5% 2.5L SYSll number W9C05T dated,31/3/2020).
The UAE ministry announced that it had decided to revoke the two lots of Extraneal based on the circular of the Public Health Agency of Canada.
The manufacturing company – Baxter Corporation – also said that it had voluntarily recalled the two lots as a precautionary measure because of high levels of sodium hydroxide.
The high levels of sodium hydroxide, which are found in the active pharmaceutical ingredient icodextrin, can cause discolouration of the solution, the manufacturing company said.
