Saudi Eman bint Abdulla Al-Ghamdi has become the first woman to hold a municipal position in her country.
She has been appointed as Assistant Municipality Chairperson for Information Technology at the City of Khobar in the Saudi Eastern province.
Eastern Province secretary-general Fahd bin Mohammed Al-Jubeir issued an edict appointing trailblazer Al-Ghamdi, who will also head the department of women-only services at the Municipality of Al-Khobar.
Saudi Vision 2030 aspires to increase the proportion of women in the labour market from current 22 per cent to 30%.
Al-Khobar Municipality had set up a women-only sector to keep abreast of the growing role of Saudi women who are engaged in commercial activities.
