A man arrested for alleged animal abuse following a complaint filed by a leading animal welfare advocate will stand trial at the Criminal Court, the Public Prosecution said yesterday.
He has been remanded in custody for seven days after a disturbing video, widely circulated on social media, appeared to show the abuse.
The Public Prosecution said it received a report from the Northern Governorate Police Directorate after the Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) flagged the incident.
The suspect is accused of filming and publishing content showing the mistreatment of animals through his social media account.
Investigations led to the identification and arrest of the account holder.
During questioning, the accused was confronted with evidence and reportedly admitted to the allegations, claiming he sought to gain more views and online fame.
The GDN reported yesterday that the video showed a small black cat being lifted by the scruff of the neck and thrown against a parked vehicle, sparking widespread condemnation. The condition of the cat remains unknown.
BSPCA chairman Mahmood Faraj reported the footage to authorities at Hidd police station, after which the case was transferred to Khamis police station.
BSPCA chief executive officer Paul Duke also condemned the incident.
As part of wider efforts to combat animal abuse, the Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry has launched a dedicated hotline, 17987227, to report cases of animal mistreatment and neglect. The hotline operates from Sunday to Thursday between 7am and 2pm.
