Bahrain’s steadfast commitment to maintain co-operation with the international community, foster global peace and security, and find a just and enduring solution to the Palestinian cause has been affirmed.
Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani reasserted Bahrain’s unwavering support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to self-determination and to establish their independent and sovereign state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab peace initiative and the relevant international resolutions.
The minister made his remarks in a speech delivered in a high-level open debate session of the United Nations Security Council he chaired on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian cause.
The session was held yesterday as part of Bahrain’s presidency of the Security Council for the month of April, in the presence of assistant secretary-general for political and peacebuilding affairs Khalid Khiari, Norwegian Foreign Minister and representative of the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee Espen Barth Eide, and member of the Board of Peace executive committee Tony Blair.
“Under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Bahrain affirms its steadfast support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people,” he said.
He noted that, in response to recent developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, Bahrain emphasises the importance of implementing the Security Council Resolution 2803 (2025) as a binding reference for ending the conflict in the Gaza Strip, consolidating the ceasefire, and establishing a ‘Board of Peace’.
Dr Al Zayani added that the participation of His Majesty in the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace, held in Washington under the chairmanship of US President Donald Trump, reflects several humanitarian and diplomatic messages. “Most notably, it underscored Bahrain’s role, as a Security Council member, in facilitating the implementation of the comprehensive peace plan, reaffirming its commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, as well as promoting the values of tolerance and coexistence.
“These principles were also reflected in the King’s initiatives during his presidency of the 33rd Arab Summit,” he noted.
He further stated that achieving stability, coexistence and tolerance in the Middle East requires respect for the legal and historical status of the city of Jerusalem, the protection of religious holy sites, support for the role of Jordan in safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites, and backing the role of the Al Quds Committee chaired by the Moroccan monarch.
The minister also stressed firm rejection of any attempts at forced displacement or demographic change, the need to halt illegal settlement expansion in the West Bank, and the importance to prevent any unlawful measures or provocative practices that could undermine peace prospects or fuel hatred and extremism.
