The Martin County Sheriff's Office in Florida just welcomed a new member to its search-and-rescue team.
Meet Splash, an otter that is going to help the Sheriff's Office in marine search-and-rescue operations.
Splash is a 2-year-old Asian small-clawed otter who has been trained in scent detection and recovery work. The Sheriff's Office reported that Splash will be a valuable asset in locating individuals in bodies of water.
Otters are known for their fantastic sense of smell. A 2006 study even suggested that otters might be able to smell underwater, too, as they exhale a bubble of air and then inhale it back to detect scents.
The images of Splash at the Sheriff's Office have gone viral.
