A Chinese man resorted to appearing on a TV show in an attempt to track down his first love. But it's not to confess his innermost feelings, but to repay a 20-year-old loan of 10,000 yuan (BD529).
The man, identified as Li, went on Henan Provincial TV Station’s programme Xiaoli Helps You. The show is known for helping ordinary people solve their problems.
According to Li, he and the woman, identified as Ma, met in 1991 when they were 23 and 25 years old, respectively.
They worked at the same company, fell in love, and dated for eight years. In 2001, they broke up after Li had to move back to his hometown to care for his ailing father. Ma lent Li 10,000 yuan to set up a company in his hometown.
“Without any hesitation, she transferred me 10,000 yuan (US$1,400). In those days when people’s average income was not high, this amount of money was a lot,” Li told the media.
Li lost Ma's contact information after losing his mobile phone and had no way to get in touch with her.
“I have been feeling regret over the past years. I hope to return the money to her. I am also wondering how she is living now,” said Li.
Although initially hopeful, Li's TV appeal has not yielded any results.
