A Japanese man was arrested for fraud after allegedly exploiting a delivery platform’s refund policy to obtain 1,095 free meals over two years, resulting in losses of more than 3.7 million yen (BD9,048) to the company.
Authorities in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, arrested Takuya Higashimoto in October for fraud.
According to reports, his method involved selecting contactless delivery through the delivery platform. Once the food was delivered, he would use the app to claim that the food had not arrived and then claim refunds.
Authorities revealed that Higashimoto, who had been unemployed for several years, had 124 different accounts with the platform that he used to avoid raising any suspicions.
He would typically purchase a new prepaid SIM card, register accounts with false names and addresses, order using these accounts, and then quickly cancel them.
“At first, I just tried this trick. I couldn’t stop after reaping the rewards of my fraud,” Higashimoto admitted to the police.
