ATHLETICS – BAHRAIN’S Birhanu Balew is now the national team’s last participant at the World Athletics Championships 2025, currently being held in Tokyo, Japan.
Balew will be taking to the track today in the men’s 5,000 metres first-round heats. This stage features two races, and 29-year-old Balew will be running in the second amongst a field of 22 long-distance specialists.
Balew must finish amongst his heat’s top eight to qualify for the medal round, which will be held on Sunday on the concluding day of this year’s worlds.
Balew heads into his event with a season’s best time of 12:48.67, which is also his personal best.
Other top names in his race are Grant Fisher from the US, Biniam Mehary from Ethiopia, Jimmy Gressier from France, and reigning world and Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen from Norway.
Balew’s run today is scheduled for a 2.19pm start, Bahrain time.
