Maurizio Cattelan’s famous banana, taped to a wall, was eaten again by an art museum visitor in France.
The piece, titled “Comedian,” was grabbed and consumed by one of the museum’s attendees, prompting security to act quickly and apprehend the hungry gallery-goer.
The artist reportedly expressed disappointment that the visitor did not also eat the banana peel and the tape, suggesting the visitor only considered the banana itself to be the artwork.
The banana was replaced minutes later, as the banana itself is considered a perishable element of the artwork that the artist has instructed to be replaced on a regular basis.
The apparent intent of the artwork is to demonstrate the “absurdity of financial speculation and the fragility of knowledge systems that underpin the art market,” according to a statement.
This marks the fourth time one of Cattelan’s bananas has been eaten, following its sale for $6.2 million at auction.
