Torrential monsoon rains triggered knee to waist-deep flooding across parts of the Philippines on Tuesday (July 22), including in the capital region, forcing a second day of school closures, flight cancellations, and suspension of government work.
"It's been almost four days since the floods have been rising and falling. It would often flood and then subside, only to rise and fall again. Last night, around 11 pm was when the floodwaters started to rise, and we decided to evacuate here because we knew what would happen after."
According to the national disaster agency, thousands of families remained in evacuation centres.
Forecasters detected two new low-pressure areas, threatening to bring more rain to already soaked regions.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., currently on an official visit to the United States, assured the public that government agencies have been mobilised to provide assistance.
