WEIGHTLIFTING – BAHRAIN’S up-and-coming weightlifters Jhon Murillo and Ingrid Vanesa Segura Grueso will be going for gold today in their respective categories in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 2025, currently being held in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The prestigious meeting features participants, both men and women, from more than 20 countries, battling it out in youth and junior divisions.
Murillo will be taking part in the men’s 94kg Group A competition today, scheduled for 5.30pm start, Bahrain time. He is one of 10 athletes entered in his pool, and is expected to be one of the top contenders for a medal.
Murillo will be going up against Yslam Akmyradov of Turkmenistan, Jun-Wei Ma of Chinese Taipei, Parv Chaudhary of India, Alisher Osmanov and Ruslan Rakhmatjonov of Uzbekistan, Denis Poluboyarinov and Alexandr Karavayev of Kazakhstan, Nader Bakr of Qatar, and Minguen Kim of South Korea.
Grueso, meanwhile, will be contesting the women’s 69kg class and will also be competing in Group A, which features 12 lifters. She is a favourite to claim a leading position in her division, which is scheduled to begin their competition at 10am, Bahrain time.
Others in her pool are Dilnura Kholdorova and Zulfiya Ramazonova of Uzbekistan, Phattharathida Wongsing of Thailand, Gulalek Kakamyradova of Turkmenistan, Bhawana Bhawana of India, Mariam Theyab of Kuwait, Hsin-Ning Chen and Han-Yung Ke of Chinese Taipei, and Kira Danilova, Sofya Shalgina, and Aiganym Zhanbolat, all from Kazakhstan.
Bahrain’s third lifter in Astana, Adrian Bonilla, kicked off the national team’s campaign yesterday in the men’s 79kg Group B category, but he could not step onto the podium.
The kingdom’s delegation at the Kazakh capital is headed by Bahrain Weightlifting Federation president Eshaq Ebrahim Eshaq, who is supporting and motivating the kingdom’s athletes.
Eshaq was on hand during the competition’s official opening ceremony, attended by International Weightlifting Federation and Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) officials.
Eshaq also took part in the meeting on Saturday of the AWF executive board, of which he is a member.
