JUDO – BAHRAINI judoka Askerbii Gerbekov was eliminated yesterday from the first round of the men’s 81kg division in the World Judo Championships 2025, currently being held in Budapest, Hungary.
Gerbekov bowed to Puerto Rican opponent Adrian Gandia in their opening Pool C encounter.
Gandia moved on to the round of 32, where he lost to Luan Almeida of Brazil, who is in the round of 16.
Gerbekov was one of 45 competitors representing 39 nations in their weight class.
Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Ruslan Poltoratskii made it through to the last 16 in the men’s 60kg division but could not advance any further.
He too was competing in his weight category’s Pool C, where he claimed a win in the round of 32 against Jairo Moreno of El Salvador.
He then advanced to the next phase, where he took on Ryuju Nagayama of Japan, who claimed the victory in their bout.
Nagayama eventually went on to secure the gold medal in their division.
Bahrain have one last judoka set to hit the mat. Said Sadrudinov will be competing in the men’s 100kg category. He is in Pool C for the opening round, where he will take on Laurin Boehler of Austria as his first opponent.
The winner will move on to face Georgios Kroussaniotakis of Cyprus in the last 32.
Sadrudinov is part of a 42-judoka field from 32 nations in his division.
