The resurgence of Covid-19 has seen up to 1,010 active cases in India, with new variants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 on the rise.
Meanwhile, Punjab has begun the process of contact tracing patients who may have contracted the highly infectious disease.
Kerala has the highest number of cases, surpassing the 400 mark. However, officials have urged people not to panic as hospitals are fully prepared for the expected surge.
According to the Health and Welfare Ministry, Maharashtra and Delhi have also seen an increase of 153 and 99 new cases, respectively.
The new variants are being intensely monitored by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and health experts state that most cases remain mild. Whether or not the current vaccines are effective in combating the new variants is still under examination.
Health experts say the situation is under control and advise people to maintain good hygiene practices.
