A bizarre trend is going viral in Finland, where women, in particular, are drinking 'beef blood' to keep their iron levels in check.
Kari Remes, an emeritus professor, stated that "as we know, blood contains red blood cells, and those cells contain iron." Confirming that the 'heme iron' in haemoglobin is "somewhat better absorbed by the body than iron pills." However, he says that the result is insignificant, and it would be easier and more aesthetic to get your iron dose from a pill, as reported by the Finnish publication Ilta-Sanomat.
However, many women complain about stomach pain caused by iron tablets, and thus, consuming blood seems to be a more favourable option.
Bottles of beef blood are commonly found in the frozen section at most supermarkets in Finland. It is usually thawed and used for cooking.
Recently, people on social media claim to drink the blood straight from the bottle, whilst some say they mix it with juice to disguise the taste.
