Cyclone Fengal on Sunday (December 1) pounded southeastern India with heavy rain and strong winds, flooding city streets after it made landfall late on Saturday (November 30).
Some residents in the city of Puducherry were seen wading in knee-high waters, while others, particularly the elderly, were evacuated from the area in boats.
Puducherry had been hit by the heaviest 24-hour rainfall in 30 years, India's weather office said on social media on Sunday. Drone video showed the city partially submerged in muddy floodwaters.
Flights from Chennai, the state capital of Tamil Nadu state, were temporarily suspended on Saturday, but had resumed as of early Sunday morning, India's airport authority said.
India's weather office said Fengal is expected to weaken further into a deep depression later in the day.
