The body of an Indian expatriate cold store employee who was killed on Saturday in a freak accident will be buried today.
Twenty-two-year-old Wasim Arif had been working as a cashier at the Al Ayyah shop in Karzakkan for six months and was known for his bright, charismatic and friendly manner.
Early on Saturday morning, at approximately 7.30am, a Ford Crown Victoria careered into the side of the shop, critically injuring Mr Arif.
He was taken by ambulance to the BDF Hospital in Riffa and succumbed to his injuries on the way.
According to numerous sources, the car driver’s blood sugar levels suddenly dropped, causing him to lose control of his vehicle. The Bahraini remains in a stable condition at the BDF Hospital.
The GDN reported yesterday that ambulance crews were quickly at the scene, as police investigated the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Born in 2001, Mr Arif only moved to Bahrain six months ago from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, where he lived with his family in Chittoor.
In response to the GDNOnline story on social media, readers shared their memories of the young store assistant, with one saying: “He was always respectful and sweet. RIP.” Another friend reminisced about how he would joke around with her siblings.
Social workers at the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre will conduct final rites at the Kanoo Mosque and bury Mr Arif today morning at the Manama Cemetery.
Mr Arif leaves behind his grieving father Arifullah Khan Dastagir, mother Sheerin Shaik Jani and an 18-year-old sister.
