A man punched a kangaroo in the face when the marsupial attacked his dog in the Murray River in Mildura, Victoria, Australia.
Mick Moloney, a former police officer, was walking along the river when he noticed that one of his dogs, Hutchy, was missing. He then saw a kangaroo with its arms submerged in the water, holding Hutchy by the neck.
All of a sudden, “Hutchy came up gasping for air, water spilling out of his mouth and screaming his head off,” Maloney told local media. He approached the kangaroo and demanded that it let go of his dog. The kangaroo refused, so Moloney punched it in the face.
The kangaroo retaliated by striking back with its claws, knocking Moloney’s phone into the water. Moloney eventually retrieved his phone and Hutchy, and both man and dog escaped unharmed. Moloney said that his Brazilian jiujitsu skills were ineffective against the kangaroo, which seemingly bested him with its ‘mixed marsupial arts’.
The incident was filmed on Moloney’s smartphone and went viral on TikTok. The video racked up more than 2.5 million views on social media before getting taken down. It was later posted on Reddit. Interestingly, a lot of the Reddit users seemed to back the kangaroo.
“Keep your dog under control and this whole situation could have been avoided,” wrote one user. “The kangaroo was defending itself, and rightly so, from two yobbos.” “That’ll teach him. Don’t let your dogs chase wildlife,” criticised another. “He’s lucky it didn’t push the dog under and stand on it.”
