The Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) will hold an extraordinary virtual session for the council of foreign ministers of member states today to address the repeated incidents of the desecration and burning of copies of the Holy Quran in Sweden and Denmark.
The session was requested by Saudi Arabia, the chair of the 14th Islamic Summit, and Iraq.
The urgent meeting of ministers has been called to implement the final communique issued by the OIC executive committee after the extraordinary meeting held in Jeddah on July 2, at the OIC General Secretariat headquarters, which called for high-level emergency meetings as needed.
The meeting also comes in light of the consultations held by the secretary general of the OIC, Hussain Brahim Taha, with the member states regarding taking further measures in response to the repeated provocative actions that represent deliberate religious hatred and intolerance.
Meanwhile, the preparations for the extraordinary session of the council of foreign ministers were discussed yesterday at the OIC General Secretariat headquarters.
During the meeting, senior staff discussed and formulated recommendations to be presented at the extraordinary ministerial session.
OIC assistant secretary general for political affairs Yousef bin Mohammed Al Dubaie, who delivered a speech during the meeting, emphasised the deep appreciation of the OIC towards Saudi Arabia and Iraq for their initiative in convening the session.
