A 23-year-old student in Pennsylvania was charged with four misdemeanours after she confessed to faking her own kidnapping to cover up the fact that she would not be graduating from college this year.
Chloe Stein, a student at Penn State was first reported missing on May 1 which triggered a state-wide search for her.
According to reports, Chloe had messaged her boyfriend on May 1 saying that she was being pulled over by a police officer while driving.
Her boyfriend attempted to call and message Chloe several times but was unable to get her on the phone.
Chloe's car was later found eerily abandoned. This prompted local authorities to issue a missing person declaration and a search.
Her plan however started to unravel when the police received an anonymous report that the 'missing' woman was actually safe and sound at a home just 30 miles from Pittsburgh.
When police officers arrived at the house, they found Chloe inside and then took her in for questioning.
Chloe told police that she was pulled over and abducted 'by an unknown male who posed as a police officer'.
She alleged that the man had a gun and blindfolded her before taking her to various locations around the area.
The police however started getting suspicious when they learnt that Chloe had not been attending college for nearly two years.
During the course of further questioning, Chloe's story completely fell apart.
She then confessed to orchestrating the entire stunt to avoid telling her family that she would not be graduating that year and that she had dropped out of college.
Court records show that Chloe was charged with false alarm to a public safety agency, falsely reporting an offence that did not occur, obstructing the administration of law, and disorderly conduct.
