A two-year-old female Chihuahua named Pearl has been declared the shortest dog alive by the Guinness World Records. Born on September 1, 2020, Pearl measures only 9.14 cm (3.59 in) in height and just 12.7 cm (5.0 in) in length. To paint a picture, she is shorter than a popsicle, tinier than a TV remote and about as long as a dollar note.
"Say hello to the shortest dog in the world; Pearl," Guinness World Records tweeted on April 10.
According to Guinness World Records, Pearl is a descendant of Miracle Milly's twin sister- who also once won the same title. Miracle Milly, born in 2011, weighed just a pound and measured 9.65 cm (3.8 in) tall until her demise in 2020.
Recently, Pearl was presented on the Lo Show Dei Record by Vanesa Semler, owner of the Italian TV show. The petit Chihuahua was moved to the stage- propped up in an Easter egg-shaped seat- by Ms Semler, gaining roaring applause. For a Chihuahua, Pearl displays a calm temperament, and was quite composed despite having a large live audience in front of her, noted the dog's owner. She told the show's host, Gerry Scotti, that Pearl is "a bit of a diva." Ms Semler mentioned that the dog enjoys "eating high-quality foods like chicken and salmon," and loves "dressing up nice."
Pearl's height had been measured three different times at the Crystal Creek Animal Hospital in Orlando, where she was born. Every measurement was taken from the base of her front foot, up to the top of the withers in a straight, vertical line.
"We're blessed to have her. And to have this unique opportunity to break our own record and share it with the world," Ms Semler said.
