Formula 1 is one of the most gruelling and intense sports on the planet, making performing consistently a mammoth challenge for the drivers and the crews. But all these tough working conditions and commitment to win give rise to some mindblowing facts that every racing fan should know! So, here we go:
- F1 drivers lose about 4 kgs of weight during a race due to extremely high temperatures in the cockpit.
- Formula 1 helmets are designed to withstand flames of up to 800°C for at least 45 seconds.
- According to F1 regulations, a driver and his seat must weigh at least 80kg. If a driver is below this weight, extra weight is added as ballasts.
- Formula 1 teams are only allowed three engines for a season and each engine must last for at least seven races.
- F1 tyres throw off little curls of rubber called ‘marbles’ that accumulate on the side of the track. As this builds up during the race, it can make overtaking incredibly difficult.
- Drivers have to demonstrate the effectiveness of their car’s two compulsory mirrors by reading letter boards at different distances behind the cockpit.
- While turning, F1 drivers are pulled by a force equal to six times their body weight – that’s more than double the amount astronauts experience during a rocket launch.
