A municipal council candidate was ‘touched’ by a viral video on social media showcasing an elderly constituent presenting her election banner with a cake and hoping she has a slice of good luck in the coming election.
Northern Municipal Council sitting councillor Zainab Al Durazi, who is running once again to represent Constituency 12 (Demistan, Malkiya, Karzakan and Al Louzi Housing), was stunned to receive a flood of messages about the video yesterday.
She told the GDN that although she doesn’t know the man personally his emotional tribute to her ‘touched her heart’.
“I have received so many calls and messages from friends, acquaintances, members of the public and even ministers and officials asking me about the video!” said Ms Al Durazi.
“I honestly don’t know who this man is but his kind gesture has really touched my heart. Hopefully, it shows that I have earned people’s trust, love and respect as I have spared no effort in serving them as a councillor.”
In the video the man is seen lifting a cake up to the banner, wishing her the best and letting her know she has his support.
Not every candidate has enjoyed such a warm show of support.
More reports on social media have highlighted torn banners and damaged billboards yesterday with several Parliament hopefuls and municipal candidates seeking assistance from legal authorities.
The authorities have reaffirmed that anyone who tries to disrupt the election process will face legal action.
The GDN previously reported that ministries and public agencies prosecution head Adnan Al Wedai told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej that any person found guilty of disrupting the freedom of voting by force or threat, or taking part in demonstrations against the democratic process, faces a jail term of not more than two years or a fine of not more than BD2,000, or both.
Mr Al Wedaei added that the Public Prosecution was ‘well prepared’ for the elections. It had conducted awareness campaigns about potential election crimes and organised training courses for its members to enable them to investigate any election violations or irregularities.
A total of 334,713 citizens have been confirmed eligible to vote in the 2022 National Elections, compared with 365,467 citizens in 2018.
The theme of this year’s poll is: ‘We vote for Bahrain’.
More than 500 Bahrainis are contesting for the 40 Parliament seats and 30 municipal council positions, with the much-awaited polls scheduled to be held on November 12.
