A Shura Council member has urged a rethink of a proposal to include non-Bahrainis in the social insurance system and grant them end-of-service gratuities.
“The move may extend the lifespan of pension funds but will create a bigger problem for the private sector,” said Human Rights Committee vice-chairman Darwish Ahmed Al Mannai.
He said the end-of-service gratuity for non-Bahrainis would strain the private sector and curtail its trade activity, as the government seeks to revitalise the economy, boost liquidity and woo investment.
“The Social Insurance Organisation will have to deal annually with tens of thousands of expatriates whose service ends,” he said.
Bahrainis are entitled to end-of-service gratuity as pay pension instalments on a monthly basis.
