UAE – An Emirati bride living in Fujairah was rushed to the hospital on her wedding night for urgent medical treatement. She was diagnosed with first and second-degree burns from the henna decorations which contained petrol addititives.
The henna decorations which caused the bride allergic burns were done by a henna 'specialist' who was selected from a social media platform.
Other women in Fujairah had also suffered second and third degree burns on their hands and feet as a result of body henna decorations.
It turned out that some Asian women, who promote their “business” online without authorisation, add unlicensed chemical subtances to the henna mixture, which left some customers with serious skin burns.
“I have never imagined that I would find myself at the hospital emergency on my wedding day”, said the bride.
She said that her friend had helped her find the Asian woman who promotes her wedding henna decorations on social media websites to attract customers.
Dermatologist Dr. Nesrine Abdulrahim warned against the health risks which may result froom mixing henna with other chemical additives to darken the colour and lengthen the time.
Under the UAE law, beauty parlours found using the banned black henna are fined at least AED 2,000, which may be doubled.
Meanwhile, the Dibba Fujaira Municipality stepped its regular and unannounved inspection visits to salons, beauty centres and other venues to ensure health requirments are implements and the products and substances are compliant with the regulations.
The Dibba Fujaira Municipality had also warned against using the black or white henna which pose health risks as they include harmful chemical substances which may cause inflammations, allergies and skin redness among other serious complications.
