A car has made international headlines after being parked at the ‘short-term’ parking space of Brandenburg Airport in Berlin for an entire year!
The grey VW Golf model has been parked at the airport since January 2024, racking up a shocking $209,124 in parking fees!
The first ten minutes of the designated parking space is free, and beyond that, the rates are as follows:
$11 for 30 minutes
$23 per hour
$552 per day
Local police, the airport management, APCOA Deutschland GmbH (the parking management company), and the local district office have denied responsibility in this case, highlighting the negligence surrounding long-term parking regulations.
Although it is unclear when exactly airport authorities noticed the abandoned vehicle, the action was finally taken, and the car was towed away on 28 January.
Police have yet to identify the owner since the Hannover license plates do not match the vehicle. It is presumed that the car may have been stolen and then dumped at the airport.
An APCOA spokesperson told The Munich Eye newspaper that “Whether parking fees owed in this context can be collected depends on whether the debtor can be identified and has the necessary financial means.”
