A man, who broke the jaw of an off-duty defence forces member who accidentally caused a collision with his sister’s car, has lost an appeal against his assault conviction.
The 26-year-old crane operator was earlier sentenced to a year in prison on charges of unintentionally causing a disability after punching the victim in the face.
According to court documents, the 56-year-old Bahraini victim had to undergo multiple operations to stabilise his jaw and remove two teeth damaged in the attack, which took place in Isa Town.
A medical report evaluated the injury as a 10 per cent disability, and further stated that the man now suffered from nerve damage in his face, and has lost sensation in some areas near his mouth.
The victim earlier told the Public Prosecution that on the day of the incident, he had parked outside a cold store to buy something, and he collided into a vehicle parked behind him when he was leaving.
He stated that the driver of the car he hit was a young woman, who called her father to help resolve the matter, who arrived at the spot with the appellant, her brother.
“While I was speaking to the father, the accused suddenly punched me,” the former BDF member stated.
The Bahraini appellant admitted to the charges before judges. His sister also testified to the incident, incriminating her brother in her Public Prosecution statements.
