Former NASCAR race driver Bobby Allison has been awarded a win for a race he participated in back in 1971.
The Myers Brothers Memorial race at Bowman Gray Stadium, North Carolina remained the only race in NASCAR history to never have an official winner. The reason for this was a certain controversy at the time around driving a Grand American car instead of a Grand National car in the race, cars that weren’t of the same ‘league’ at the time.
Though Bobby finished ahead of NASCAR legend Richard Petty in that race, he was never credited with an official win but was awarded a Grand American Series win driving his 1969 Ford Mustang with Petty taking the win for the Grand National Series, with the race never having a conclusive proper winner.
53 years later, NASCAR finally decided to award the win to Bobby raising his career total wins to 85 and pushing him up to the fourth place in the all-time rankings.
Interestingly, this also marks the first win for the Ford Mustang in NASCAR, previously the first win for the Mustang was by Brad Keselowski in Atlanta 2019.
